There’s No Single Update That Fixes Everything

Principle #25 – Sometimes there’s one right way. Probably not this time.

Tech culture loves the idea of “the one right way.” One formula to rule them all, one update that fixes everything, one perfect workflow that never fails.

Spoiler: that’s not how complex systems work.

In tech (and business), the “one right way” is often context-dependent—and temporary. Today’s best practice is tomorrow’s outdated patch. Chasing one fixed “right way” can lock you into rigid processes and stifle innovation.

Software evolves. So should your approach.

The Hero’s Move

  • Prioritize adaptability: Look for solutions that adjust as the environment changes.
  • Test, don’t decree: Pilot new ideas and scale what actually works instead of assuming you know in advance.
  • Empower local choices: Different teams may need different methods to solve similar problems.

Think of it like software versions: there isn’t one perfect release—you iterate, improve, and push updates as you learn. The “one right way” might exist for a moment—but probably not this time.

The Next Step

Where in your organization are you clinging to one “official” way that no longer fits? Try giving teams space to test new approaches, collect data, and share what works.Because in a world of shifting code and shifting markets, rigidity is a bug, not a feature.
